The EU Blue Card salary threshold rises to €53,100 in 2027
The salary threshold for the EU Blue Card is not reinvented every year: it is tied to the contribution assessment ceiling of the statutory pension insurance (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze). That ceiling follows average earnings, and the Blue Card bar moves with it automatically. The figures for 2027 are already known.
What changes on 1 January
| Category | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Standard threshold, per year | €50,700 | €53,100 |
| Standard threshold, per month | €4,225 | €4,425 |
| Reduced threshold, per year | €45,934.20 | €48,108.60 |
| Reduced threshold, per month | €3,827.85 | €4,009.05 |
The standard threshold goes up by €2,400 a year and the reduced one by €2,174.40. Per month that is €200 and €181.05.
Where the figures come from
Under § 18g AufenthG the standard threshold is exactly half the pension contribution ceiling, and the reduced one is 45.3 per cent of it. For 2026 the ceiling was €101,400 a year; for 2027 it rises to €106,200. That is how €53,100 and €48,108.60 come about.
This link means two things. First, the threshold is reviewed every January, so it should never come as a surprise. Second, the figures can be worked out in advance, as soon as the social insurance reference values are published, usually in September or October.
Where the regulation stands
The draft reference values were prepared by the Federal Ministry of Labour. The regulation (Sozialversicherungsrechengrößen-Verordnung 2027) was adopted by the federal cabinet on 12 October 2026. One step is left: approval by the Bundesrat. After that the new values apply from 1 January 2027.
Until that approval the figures are formally not final. At this stage, though, changes are rare: the values follow a formula set in law rather than a political decision.
Who gets the reduced threshold
The lower bar applies to three groups:
- shortage occupations: doctors and nursing staff, engineers and architects, IT, mathematics and natural sciences, teachers and educators, managers in production and IT;
- graduates who finished their studies no more than three years ago;
- IT specialists without a relevant degree who have at least three years of experience within the last seven.
One important caveat: with the reduced threshold the job must be approved by the Federal Employment Agency (Zustimmung). Your employer can speed this up with a pre-approval (Vorabzustimmung). No approval is needed at the standard threshold.
Why this matters right now
The bar applies not to the date you sign the contract but to the moment the authority decides on your application. An application decided in the new year is therefore normally measured against the new threshold.
The practical conclusion follows. If your offer sits between €50,700 and €53,100, it formally clears the bar today and misses it from January. Two sensible steps:
- Do not delay filing if your documents are ready and you are counting on the current bar.
- Agree a salary with a margin. Two or three thousand euros a year of headroom settles the question for this year and the next, and renegotiating a contract over a hundred euros a month later is awkward for both sides.
You can check your own figure against both years in our Blue Card threshold calculator: it uses the 2026 and 2027 thresholds and flags it separately when a salary clears today but falls short after the January rise.
Renewals are measured against the new threshold
This is the part people find out about last. When a Blue Card is renewed, the authority looks at the salary again and applies the current threshold, even if the employer is the same and the contract has not changed.
So someone who arrived in 2026 on €51,000 will, at renewal a few years later, be compared with the threshold of that year. If the salary has not moved in the meantime, the renewal turns into a problem. We covered timing and documents in “Renewing the EU Blue Card”.
What else changes in January
Other figures rise alongside the Blue Card threshold:
- the compulsory health insurance threshold: from €77,400 to €84,150 a year, that is €7,012.50 a month. Above that an employee may choose private health insurance;
- the health insurance contribution ceiling: from €69,750 to €76,500 a year. This rise is larger than usual: €300 a month was added on top of the calculated value under the contribution stabilisation act.
For Blue Card holders this matters for one reason: the Blue Card threshold (€53,100) is well below the threshold for moving to private insurance (€84,150). Most people arriving on a Blue Card therefore start in public insurance, and the choice between GKV and PKV does not open up straight away. You can work through your case in the private health insurance calculator, and the differences are set out in “GKV or PKV”.
In short
- Compare the salary in your offer with the 2027 threshold, not only with today's.
- If you land between the old and the new bar, decide now: file faster or ask for a rise.
- With the reduced threshold, allow time for the Federal Employment Agency's approval.
- If a renewal is coming up, look at your salary through the eyes of next year's authority.
To go through a specific offer and choose the right route, book a consultation; what the Blue Card actually gives you and which documents you need is covered in “The EU Blue Card in Germany”.
FAQ
What is the EU Blue Card salary threshold in 2027?
The standard threshold will be €53,100 gross a year, that is €4,425 a month. The reduced threshold for shortage occupations, graduates of the last three years and IT specialists without a degree will be €48,108.60 a year, that is €4,009.05 a month.
Why does the threshold rise every year?
It is tied to the contribution assessment ceiling of the statutory pension insurance: the standard threshold is half of it and the reduced one 45.3 per cent. The ceiling follows average earnings, so the Blue Card bar goes up every January automatically.
Does the new threshold affect people already living in Germany on a Blue Card?
A card that has been issued is not reopened; it runs to its own expiry date. At renewal, however, the authority looks at the salary again and applies the threshold of the year of the renewal, even with the same employer.
Can I still apply under the old threshold?
What counts is the moment the authority decides on your application, not the date you signed the contract. If your documents are ready, do not sit on them. If the salary in your offer is close to the line, agreeing a figure with some headroom is safer: it settles the question for this year and the next.
Are the new figures final?
The regulation was adopted by the federal cabinet on 12 October 2026 and still needs the Bundesrat's approval. The values follow a formula set in law, so changes at this stage are rare, but the procedure is formally not complete.
